Westport is no stranger to success at national Tidy Towns awards over the years, and next weekend, Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25, the town will host the 2017 National Tidy Towns Conference. The conference is a unique opportunity for Tidy Towns groups around the country to learn from and share their experiences with other Tidy Towns communities nationwide. There will also be guidance on the preparation for the 2017 competition and it will feature three lectures from three national tidy town adjudicators.
The event which will be held in Westport Town Hall will get under way on Friday, March 24, with the official opening by Cllr Brendan Mulroy, Cathaoirleach of the West Mayo Municipal District at 8pm, that will be followed by a lecture by well known architect and TV personality Dermot Bannon, 'Westport Tidy Towns - Sweeping Through the Years.'
The Saturday conference will get under way at 9.15am and will feature 10 different speakers and lectures over the day, with highlights including 'Our Story - Sharing the Skerries Success' by Maeve McGann and Anne Doyle from Skerries Tidy Towns, last year's overall national winners. Other interesting topics to be covered include 'What Makes for a Good Biodiversity Project' by Billy Flynn, National Tidy Towns adjudicator, and 'The Westport Experience' by Eithne Larkin, chairperson of Westport Tidy Towns and Simon Wall, Westport town architect.
