Newport Fianna Fáil councillor Frank Chambers has announced that he will not be contesting the forthcoming Mayo County Council elections on June 5, despite having received the Fianna Fáil nomination for the Westport electoral area. Cllr Chambers made the announcement at a meeting of the Michael Kilroy Fianna Fáil Cumann.
Cllr Chambers stated: “It is with regret that I am making this announcement but it is based on a number of factors. Firstly, it is based on personal reasons and secondly on the boundary division of Newport town. The town of Newport is now divided by the Black Oak Rise into two electoral areas. Medlicott Street and environs are now in the Westport area and the remainder of the town of Newport is now in the Belmullet area.”
Following the next Local Elections the town of Newport will no longer have a sitting county councillor.
