Achill based Fianna Fáil councillor Paul McNamara has asked for a progress report on the proposed Signature Discovery Point that was announced for Keem Bay in Achill almost two years ago. Keem Bay was selected as one of a number of Signature Discovery Points along the Wild Atlantic Way and it was proposed that a glass viewing platform overhanging the Atlantic Ocean near the old Coastguard station would be constructed.
Cllr McNamara said at the January meeting: "Mayo County Council did hold a public information day on the project and over 200 people attended to give their view on it, and it was very much welcomed by the people of Achill, because an investment of that size would be so important for the tourism industry on the island. But since then nothing has really happened, I raised it last March at a West Mayo Municipal District meeting to see what was happening. At the time it launched it was said that the project would be up and running for the tourist season of 2016 and we're now into 2017, and I would like to get a full up to date report as to where the project is at, what monies have been ring fenced for it, or has it been ring fenced, and if there are environmental studies or reports to be carried out is that going to be taken out of the monies that have been ringfenced?"
The chief executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes, replied: "We will give you a written report on that rather than a written one, to make sure you get a proper update as to where it is exactly at so we can be more thorough."
