Mayo records higher temperatures and lower rainfall last year

Mayo saw higher mean temperatures and lower total rainfall in 2016 compared to 2015 according to the records from Met Eireann's four weather stations in the county. The warmest mean monthly temperature recorded in the county was in Newport in August at 15.5 degrees, with the Claremorris station recording a monthly mean high temperature of 15.1 degrees in August also, while in the same month Knock Airport recorded a monthly mean year high of 14.4 degrees with Belmullet's station recording its monthly mean high for the year of 14.6 degrees in June.

The wettest months in the four stations were February in Newport, with 237.6mm of rain falling, while for the other three stations January was the wettest month with 189.1mm falling in Belmullet, 183.4mm in Knock Airport, and 169.9mm being recorded in Claremorris.

The station that recorded the highest total annual rainfall was Newport which had 1,579.2mm falling last year, it was followed in second place by Knock Airport which had 1,230.1mm fall over the 12 months from January to December, with Belmullet having 1,183.3mm of rainfall over the same period, and Claremorris reporting 1,099.6mm of rainfall for the year.

Newport also had the highest annual mean temperature for the whole year, with their mean temperature for the 12 months coming in a 10.5 degrees, with Belmullet just behind at 10.4 degrees, Claremorris' annual mean temperature was 9.6 degrees and Knock Airport's came in at 9.0 degrees for the year just gone.
