Hothouse Flowers frontman Liam Ó Maonlaí and top concertina player Cormac Begley join forces for what promises to be a great evening of traditional music at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday January 18 at 8pm.
Needing little introduction, Liam Ó Maonlaí rocketed to international attention as part of Hothouse Flowers when the band performed the sensational interval segment of the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest. In 2005 he released a solo album entitled Rian, a collection of tunes and songs as Gaeilge. Ó Maonlaí has toured the world, and in between Flowers releases, he has pursued a number of solo projects, collaborating with the likes of U2 and Van Morrison as well as many top traditional musicians.
Cormac Begley hails from a well-known musical family on the Dingle Peninsula. He is the founder of Airt School and the award winning Tunes in the Church live concert series in Galway and Dublin. The duo have been working together on various projects since they first met at Celtfest Cuba in 2010, and over the last few years, the pair have performed together in acclaimed band Ré featuring Maitiú Ó'Casaide, Eithne Ní Chatháin, and Peter Ó'Toole and Fabulous Beast’s creation of Rian. Together they have toured all over Ireland and further afield including Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand. A great night of music is in prospect.
