Senator Michelle Mulherin this week at the Mayo Joint Policing Committee's quarterly meeting which was held in Ireland West Airport Knock expressed her concern about the lack of a sniffer dog to detect drugs on incoming flights at the airport. She criticised the Revenue Commissioners for the removal of a sniffer dog that had been previously at the airport. She was also critical that the Revenue Commissioners did not send a representative to the meeting to discuss the dog's removal.
She added that with more than 700,000 people using the airport and half of those coming inbound she did not want to see the airport become a soft underbelly for the smuggling of drugs.
Chief Garda Superintendent for Mayo, Pat Diskin, who chaired the meeting alongside Cllr Al McDonnell said that he was satisfied that the airport was not a main hub for the entry of drugs into the region and that good progress was being made in regards drug detection and extra resources were being directed to detecting drug supply in the county.
