Mayo Volleyball Club made the journey to north Dublin to face second place Santry in a battle for top spot. Santry who are playing in division two after being relegated from the top tier last season therefore provided an unknown quantity as they benefited from the experience of playing sides in a higher division week in week out.
This aligned with the fact the Dubliners only lost once this season meant Mayo knew they could not take them for granted. The opening set began in a tit for tat fashion as the teams could not be separated. That said Mayo held their resolve in the latter stages winning the set 25-21.The second set began like the first in a close encounter but midway through Mayo started to pull ahead. They survived a late rally from Santry to win 25-19.
It was all or nothing for Santry in the next set as they threw everything at Mayo. However the third set proved to be the last as Mayo remained determined to see out the game and that they did as they won the set 25-21 and indeed the match 3-0. The Westerners have now defeated all their promotion challengers, thus further cementing their position at the top of division two.
They will reach the midway point of the season when they play their last game of 2016 against Aer Lingus Kestrels in the ALSAA arena in Dublin on December 11.
