Mayo sides in FAI Junior Cup showdowns

Soccer: FAI Junior Cup fifth round

Two of the three Mayo sides in FAI Junior Cup action have home advantage this weekend in the fifth round of the FAI Junior Cup, with just Super League champions Westport United hitting the road to take on Swords based outfit Rivervalley Rangers in the nation's capital.

United will be be taking on a side who are currently sitting in second bottom place in the AUL Division 1A, with just one win from their seven league outings so far this season, with their solitary three points coming from their last league outing at the start of last month.

In their round four clash, United put the hurt on Conn Rangers running out 10-1 winners, with five different players, Dave Hoban, Darren Browne, James O’Donnell, Phil Keegan, and Adam Mulchrone all hitting the back of the net twice. John Brennan’s side will be facing a much different and tougher task on Sunday when they take on a side that gained promotion to the top division of AUL soccer last season along with reaching the last eight of the FAI Junior Cup, having made it to the last 16 the year before.

Castlebar Celtic host Louth based Bellurgan United who ply their trade in the NEFL Premier Division where they are currently sitting in fourth place in the top division of that league, with four wins from their eight games to date in that division. Last weekend they had a 5-0 win over Kells Celtic in their local cup competition.

Iorras Aontaithe will take on a more familiar foe for Mayo League sides when they host Boyle Celtic from the Sligo-Leitrim District League. Last season, Boyle Celtic claimed the Sligo-Leitrim Super League, going the whole season unbeaten on that run. In the last round of the competition they saw off Shiven Rovers 5-2 to book their spot in the fifth round of the competition and are sure to give a serious test to Iorras Aontatihe on Sunday.
