Mayo AC's four representatives on the Irish team did the club proud competing in the 29th annual British & Irish Masters International in Glasgow on Saturday. Masters athletes in five-year age group categories from 35 up to 75 from Ireland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland competed in three races.
The event was hosted by Scottish Veteran Harriers Club. The races were over three or four laps of a 2k route at Tollcross Park. The course was over undulating terrain with differing surface conditions at various points and open ground interspersed with sections through mature trees. Real cross country, according to the Mayo team.
The four Mayo AC runners ran 6k in the first race, which included all women and men over 65, 70, and 75. They all ran well and continued the club's success in these championships and annual representation in the Irish team.
Pauline Moran finished third individual F60 and her Irish team won gold F60. Norah Newcombe was ninth individual F35 and the team won bronze. Mags Glavey finished fifth individual and her F65 team won bronze. Colette Tuohy came home seventh individual and her Irish F45 team won silver. They received their medals on Saturday night at the dinner and presentation of awards in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Glasgow’s waterfront.
Ireland’s M35 team, including Sligo AC’s Emmett Dunleavy, won gold. Ireland’s M65 team, led by JJ Murphy running barefoot, were also in gold, and included Martin McEvilly (GCH ). Congratulations to all four masters athletes. They will be representing the club again at the 51st Hollymount Road Races next Sunday, November 20, and at the Mayo AC end of season awards party on November 26.
