The convent hall in Ballina will be transformed into East Coast Ivy League Harvard University, when St Mary's Secondary School, Ballina, presents the original stage script Illegally Blonde for a four night run next month.
The annual transition year stage, song, music, and dance extravaganza promises to be bigger and better than ever in what is surely one of the school’s most ambitious performances to date - a feat indeed when you consider the school's rich theatrical tapestry of classics such as The Sound of Modern Music, Sister Action, Hairsprayed, Grease, Calamitous Jane and Fiddler on the Rooftop. A 100-strong cast of TY students, supported by the second year chorus line and fifth year choir, present this all-American combination of love and laughter to life; as they take to the stage.
Illegally Blonde is an original script which follows the trials and tribulations of Elle Woods who ‘so totally’ wants to take on Harvard – and all those who refuse to take her seriously. Can she prove that she is a capable, conscientious, determined, and truly driven young woman – as well as a fashion conscious society girl? Was it worth leaving the bright lights of Beverly Hills behind?

The extended four night run takes in a Saturday night performance in response to a high volume of requests from past pupils of St Mary’s who want to catch the show as well as reliving their own happy memories of treading the boards.
School principal Robert O’Reilly is looking forward to what promises to be a great four nights of entertainment. "The school musical is a cornerstone of our superb TY programme and gives all the girls an opportunity to excel and showcase their wonderful talents both on and off the stage." He paid tribute to the extensive teamwork behind the annual stage musicals at St Mary’s including director Peter McLoughlin, musical director Regina Deacy, choreographer Annette Leonard, and the huge backstage effort from the art staging department, home economics costume department, as well as the teams who take on the make-up, stage management, and box office. He also wanted to specifically mention the parents association, the members of the Ballina Stephenites, and all those who give freely of their time to make it a spectacular show.
