Fine Gael selects ticket for Castlebar electoral area

Fine Gael has selected a four man ticket to contest the seven seats in the newly expanded Castlebar electoral area in the Mayo County Council elections this June. The incumbent councillors Henry Kenny and Cyril Burke will be joined on the ticket by Castlebar Town Councillor Eugene McCormack and Mayor Kevin Guthrie.

Fine Gael currently has three sitting councillors from Castlebar but with the decision of Paddy McGuinness not to run this time it leaves one seat up for grabs. Castlebar Town Councillor Brendan Henaghan along with Padraig Corcoran lost out on the nomination at the selection convention last Monday night, while John Devaney withdrew from the race before voting began. Fine Gael has only two more conventions to sort out in the county before election, with the Ballina Town Council selection convention scheduled to take place on Monday March 2 and the Ballina area selection convention down for Sunday March 8.
