Finbar Hoban presents: The Bastard Rain

Dublin group The Bastard Rain come to Bar Ritz next Saturday night February 28 as part of the Finbar Hoban Presents series with support from Green Lights (last ever show ) plus Vamos from Galway will be performing a DJ set in between the live entertainment.

Electronic pop rock, mish mash outfit Green Lights were formed in summer 2006 by house mates Colin Boylan (vocals, guitar, samplers, mini megaphone, drills ) Daniel (drums ) and Nigel (keyboards, glockenspiel, backing vocals, scream phone ). Time to Tell the parents is the follow up the band’s debut release The Small Curious Things EP that was released in March 2008. Their second EP Time to Tell the Parents was released on the band’s own label 516 Records in November. The EP was recorded in Dublin’s famous Red Lab studios in a single weekend session in August 2008. The four tracks on the EP range from electro pop opener ‘Cut to the Chase’ to the atmospheric sounds of ‘Tiny Little Ghost’. The band themselves have played with almost all of the heavy hitters of the independent Irish alternative scene including Fight Like Apes, Adebisi Shank, and Twin Kranes. So be sure to check out Dublin’s very own Green Lights as this will be the group’s last show for a very long time before lead singer Colin Boylan heads off to Japan for a year to follow his medical studies.

The headline act of the night will be an excellent three-piece group from Dublin called The Bastard Rain. These three fine musicians have being playing together for the past five years, the band themselves feature some nice Psyche tinged fuzzy Rock sounds with a bit of everything from Radiohead, to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds sounds with mad electronics and Irish folk elements, The Bastards consist of Eoin Bastard, (guitars ) Phil Bastard (Keys/beats ) and Johnny Bastard (lead vocals, & Synths ). A wide range of animate and inanimate objects, including spaghetti westerns, shoe gazing, and right-wing Japanese literature inspires them. Their music is a mix of rockabilly, garage rock and lo-fi electronica or garage-folk-billy if you prefer.

In May of last year they released their first EP titled This Bastard Rain will crush us. Since then they have been recording and playing around Ireland and hope to release their debut album provisionally titled Of Stolen Birds around May of this year on the Drunken Lust label, with a brand new single due out around the end of March. Also on the night there will be a DJ set from Galway group Vamos, Tom and Andre spin a mix of alternative grooves with a added slice of Reggae, they play records that inspire them to make music, records that sound great and only on vinyl. Castlebar’s only alternative live boutique event continues next Saturday night the February 28, bringing the best alternative music groups from around the country right to your front door. Doors for the show open at 9pm and the live entertainment gets under way at 9.30pm. Sound will be provided by West Coast Audio.
