Coast Guard in early morning rescue off Mayo coast

The Coast Guard was called to evacuate an injured crewman from a vessel off the Mayo coast early yesterday.

The Sligo-based Coast Guard helicopter R118 lifted the crewman from a large tanker some 350km off Eagle Island at around 8am yesterday. The tanker was on a transatlantic journey to the Orkney Islands when the man sustained an injury.

The overnight operation was jointly coordinated with the UK Coastguard which had initially been alerted. Weather conditions on scene were described as reasonable with northwesterly winds of up to 40km per hour.

The injured crewman was transferred to Sligo University Hospital.
