Nolan and Gleeson win Ballyhaunis 8k

It was bright, showery, and breezy for the eighth annual RunWest Ballyhaunis Fit4Life 8k which took place over the familiar one lap course. The race was part of Mayo AC’s Vodafone C&C Cellular 2016 Club League with points to be won by club members. The rain cleared and the sun shone as the field turned off the Claremorris road and took on the tough climbs from 3-5k which always provide an extra challenge.

Claremorris duo – John Nolan in 30:50, and Kathy Gleeson in 31:10 – were the winners of the men’s and women’s races. John Nolan led home two Mayo AC runners Paul Reynolds and Neil Carroll in second and third. Kathy Gleeson also had two Mayo AC athletes in close contention. There were just 23 seconds separating the top three women who finished third, fourth and fifth overall – Ann Lennon in second place 31:30, and Sarah Syron finishing strongly close behind her in third 31:33. Mayo AC won all the age category prizes with W40 winner Tracy Cunnane in great form cutting 90 seconds off her 8k PB in 38:27 and Angela O’Connor W50 13th overall in 33:11. There was an excellent turnout by the Ballyhaunis Fit4Life runners as they competed for prizes on the local terrain.
