If he follows through on what he said in Louisburgh on Monday afternoon at the September meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District, Cllr Christy Hyland could have a wall named after himself in Carrowholly. The independent Westport based councillor hit out again at the slow moving progress on the implementation of flood defence works in Carrowholly after the area suffered serious flooding in 2014.
Cllr Hyland raised the issue of a stone wall that had been washed away in the flooding and has not yet been reinstated, the wall had served as flood defence for many years. Cllr Hyland was disappointed to hear at the meeting that the wall would not be put back in place in the near future and told the meeting: "If I have to go out there on a Saturday morning with the locals to put it back in ourselves, we'll do it." He told the meeting he had been asked if the stones would be put back in place, and if not the locals and he would do it themselves, because there is a great fear among locals that they will get flooded again in the near future.
