Shirtless and bloody man fined for Claremorris public order offence

A Claremorris man was convicted and fined €200 for two public order offences in Claremorris District Court this week.

Michael Cleary of Gurteen More, Claremorris, who pleaded guilty to the charges, was arrested by Garda Ann Hoban on October 19 2008 at 1.40am on Ballyhaunis Road, Claremorris. Garda Hoban told court that she was on duty that night and saw Cleary being held by bouncers from a night club, he was shirtless and bloody at the time. He had been involved in an altercation earlier in the night and was trying to gain access to the night club. Cleary was highly intoxicated and engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour to the gardaí when they approached him.

Cleary told the court that he could not remember the incident on the night as he was very drunk. Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €100 for section four public order (being intoxicated in public ) and €100 for section five public order offence (engaging in offensive conduct in a public place ).
