Westport United about to realise a long held dream

On Sunday week, Westport United will see a dream become reality when its new home ground is officially opened on the Golf Course Road in the town. United is one of the most successful clubs in Mayo soccer, claiming the the biggest competition in junior soccer in the country when they won the FAI Junior Cup back in 2005.

To celebrate the opening of its new home ground, a festival of football and family fun will take place from 1pm to 5pm next Sunday, September 25. The opening day is an opportunity to celebrate this amazing milestone for the club, which was made possible by community partnership, fundraising, and lots of hard work. The opening day will be a festival of football and family fun to formally introduce new - and prospective – members to the new pitches and clubhouse in their new home on the Golf Course Road.

Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, Michael Ring, will officially open the facility at 1pm, followed by a blessing by Fr Charlie Mc Donnell, Rev Val Rodgers, and Fr Ger Burns. There will then be tours of the clubhouse and the dressing rooms.

At 2pm, the Festival of Football will commence allowing young players to play on the new pitches for the very first time and each player will receive a certificate to remember the opening day. League of Ireland players – past players of Westport United - will be in attendance in club colours to inspire the young players and there will be training sessions with the FAI. The opening day will be chock full of fun for the whole family with face painting, inflatable games, music and Toons and Balloons. Refreshments will also be available to purchase on the day.

Parking is being made available by Westport House for the opening day and An Garda Siochána ask that you follow the parking stewards’ instructions. Westport United looks forward to welcoming the community on Sunday September 25.
