Would you like your child to have the chance to participate in a unique programme which brings the existing curriculum and the world of business together in a fun environment. Fifth and sixth class primary students in schools throughout Mayo are being given the chance to become involved in an award winning programme which will see them mentored by business people from their own communities willing to share their experience with them.
Local entrepreneur Frank Salmon, CEO of CMS Distribution, is to provide the 12 week programme free to schools and students throughout Mayo wishing to participate. “Children are creative and curious by nature, and these are just two of the skills required to be successful in business. Through JEP, we want to show children just how much fun creating, working, and succeeding in business can be.”
Danny Charlton principal Craggagh NS added: “The Junior Entrepreneur Programme brings entrepreneurship into primary schools and helps students develop existing skills such as literacy and numeracy, but also new skills such as problem solving, technology, communication, team building, confidence and creative thinking. Twenty six thousand five hundred students nationally have already participated in the Junior Entrepreneur Programme and seen the benefits at first hand. I’m 15 years teaching and it was easily the most rewarding project I have been involved in. It is very well planned and linked in with our curriculum, which makes it easier for teachers to justify spending so much time on it, as our timetables are overloaded already.”

The Junior Entrepreneur Programme was founded by Jerry Kennelly of Tweak.com and developed by the Institute of Technology in Tralee, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, and Shannon Development. It aims to sow the seeds of entrepreneurship in the community, and provide young people with the skills, support, and abilities they will need for the future.
