The latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL ) shows Castlebar in joint 35th position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities and deemed “littered”. The town was judged to be ‘clean’ and finished in 23rd spot in last year’s rankings.
The An Taisce report on Castlebar stated “A disappointing result for Castlebar. The recycle facility at Tesco / Dunnes Stores had improvement somewhat since it was last included in IBAL Litter Survey but was still a littered site. A couple of the moderately littered sites in Castlebar (N5 Westport Approach Road and R311 Newport Road ) were both brought down by the litter associated with abandoned/ isused properties. Market Street was attractively presented but let down by high levels of litter.”
Kilkenny once again topped the table, ahead of Enniscorthy, Kildare and Waterford City. The survey showed sweet papers as once again the most common form of litter on our streets, followed by fast food wrappers, cigarette butts and chewing gum. There was a rise in the prevalence of cans and plastic bottles.
