Open week a huge success in Castlebar, Ballyhaunis gears up for captains prize

Castlebar Ladies Golf Club

Open Week was held last week and was a mighty success. The first competition was Hynes Shoes 18-hole Stableford and was won by Mary Glynn. Leah Kerr finished second with Sheila Baynes taking the gross prize and Derval Molloy was third. Monday was Irwin’s Menswear 18-hole Stableford which was won by Kay Mulroy, second place went to Mary Glynn, the gross was won by Connie White and Daryl Conroy took third place.

On Tuesday in the Elvery's Sports Scotch Foursomes the pair of Una Lydon and Mary Ross McNulty won out at the end of the day, Connie White and Breda Gillvary came second and Kay Gallary and Kathleen Flynn came home in third. Wednesday was an 18 hole singles Stableford sponsored by Herterich Butchers and that was won by Connie White. Connie also set a new course record of one under par for the round, bringing her handicap down to five. Breege Kavanagh from Ballinrobe was second with the gross going to Sheila Baynes and Mary Mckeon was third. The Thursday mixed foursomes was sponsored by Supervalu, the winners for the day were Paul Kilcourse and Cora Mulroy. Second place went to Breda Tobin and Richard Tobin and third to Ilish McGing and Michael McGing.

The Friday fourball betterball sponsored by Lynch's Breaffy House Hotel saw Breta Fitzmaurice and Una Lydon come out on top, with second place going to Sheila Baynes and Carmel Moran and third place went to Derval Molloy and Karen Moylette. Saturday was the last day of the open and was sponsored by Heaton Sportsworld. Daryl Conroy took the honour of winner with Pauline O'Donoghue coming a close second. Leah Kerr won gross and Ilish McGing was third. It was back to business as normal on Sunday and the 18 hole Stableford sponsored by Monagan and Sons was won by Ilish McGing rounding off a very successful week for her. In second place was Lady Captain Maura Phelan and in thrid spot was Ilish Flood.

Ballyhaunis Golf Club

The weekend 18-hole stroke competition sponsored by Keith Revines was won by Tom Prenty with a score of 63 playing off 10, Garreth Delaney came second with a score of 64 playing off 16. Tom Meegan came third with a score foR 65 off 20. The junior section was won by Paul Finnegan with a score of 59 playing off 24. The ladies’ section was won by Margaret Dyer with a score of 68 on the back nine. Marina Coyne came second with a score of 68 and Ita Fahy third with a score of 70.

The captain’s prize competition this weekend has three different starting groups with an early morning group starting from 7.30am to 8.34am, the next starting time will be the mid- morning session starting at 10.40am and going on till 12.08pm, the afternoon session will get underway at 2.20pm and run until 3.48pm.

Junior and juvenile members will play on Saturday only, the top 21 plus those tied for 21st place will play again on Sunday from 1.15pm onwards, all others will play from 8.30am to 10.30am. Mulranny Golf Club

Bridie Moran, with a 66, was the winner of Maureen Noone's Captain's Prize in Mulranny on Saturday. Played in perfect weather conditions, Bridie just edged out the gallant Helen Walker who finished on the same score. This was Bridie's third Captain's title in Mulranny and it was due to some inspired putting. In her victory speech, she thanked Maureen for the beautiful prize and praised all who contributed to a wonderful occasion. Lady Captain Maureen expressed her thanks to the competitors, visitors, committee, caterers, greenkeeper, family and all who made her day such a special occasion.

Other prize winners were: Gross: Maureen McGovern 84, 3rd: Maureen Mulloy 68, 4th: Barbara Daly 68, Past Captain: Patsy Mulchrone 68, 5th: Mary McDonald 70, 6th: Anne Horkan 72, 7th: Patricia O'Malley 72, 1st: Nine: Trish Hoban, 2nd: Nine Maureen O'Hara. Mens nine holes: 1st: J.J. Kelly, 2nd: Neil O'Donnell, 3rd: John Roughneen. Visitors: 1st: Carmel Henry, 2nd: Patricia Larkin, 3rd: Jim Conlon. Next Saturday’s Golfer of the Year competition is sponsored by Castlebar Credit Union and a draw takes place at 11am.
