Historical talk by Ann Chambers at Ballintubber Abbey

Anne Chambers, author of nine biographies, an historical novel, a collection of short stories and film screenplays, will give a historical talk in Ballintubber Abbey on Monday July 25 at 8pm. The title of the talk will be "Tibbot-ne-Long - First Lord Mayo and His Family". The De Burgo Chalice will also be on display, the talk will take about 45 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A session.

Castlebar Rotary Club to host music concert in The Linenhall Centre

Castlebar Rotary Club is hosting a concert by the Leicester Grammar School Bands on Saturday July 16 at 7pm in The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar. Leicester Grammar School (LGS ) is one of the top schools music groups in the UK, and has ongoing affiliations with Rotary Clubs nationally and internationally. The main groups who will perform on the night will be the: LGS Symphonic Wind Band (44 players ), String Orchestra (31 players ), Music for Choir (27 singers ). It promises to be a lovely musical evening and funds raised will go to Castlebar Concert Band and to the Mayo Youth Orchestra. Tickets available at the door are €10 each.

Údarás na Gaeltachta Irish language plans

Údarás na Gaeltachta invites applications from organisations and community groups interested in becoming lead organisations and undertaking language plans in these areas. The four new Language Planning Areas that have been announced include Maigh Eo Thiar, Co Mayo. To date 18 lead organisations are undertaking language plans in 18 Language Planning Areas. The deadline for applications is September 16 . Údarás will hold information sessions in each of the areas over the coming weeks. Gortskehy NS fundraising night

A fundraising race night in aid of Gortskehy National School extension will take place on Saturday July 16 in Garrymore Hall. The first race will take place at 9.30pm, there is free admission and all are welcome. Founded in 1887, Gortskehy National School is a three-teacher primary school situated in the parish of Roundfort. The school is characterised by very positive working relationships among the whole school community, management, teachers, parents, and pupils. There is a welcoming and homely atmosphere in the school and a stimulating learning environment provided for all. The school needs to extend due to the volume of new pupils wanting to attend and would be grateful for your support.

Balla notes

It's bingo night on Monday, July 18 in Balla Community Centre. Total payout €2,600 with excellent prizes on the raffle. Come along as it promises to be a good night. Cumman na mBan Decade of Centenaries Exhibition in Kilmovee

Kilmovee Heritage Centre and Cois Tine have a fascinating exhibition on the women who fought for Irish independence on display in the Thatched Cottage. This will be on display Monday to Friday, from 10am to 4pm for July and August and on Sunday's July 17, 24 and 31 after Mass from 10.30am to 11.30am. The exhibition, highlights as it says “What did the women do?” through the stories of Cumann na mBan and the role of women in the cultural, literary and ultimately political revival of the decade from 1912 to 1922. It tells the story of Mayo’s Kathleen Lynn, one of the most senior officers in the 1916 Rising and Nurse Elizabeth O'Farrell the women who delivered the 1916 surrender with Pearse and shows how the formation of Cumann na mBan was a vital step in the empowerment of women. The Keel Artisan Food and Craft Market is back for the summer season: taking place every Saturday from 10am to 1pm in the Keel Community Hall in Achill - across from The Beehive. Shop in a friendly atmosphere for the best in local produce, baked goods, and creative crafts.

Pioneer pilgrimage

The Pioneer Association and Matt Talbot pilgrimage to Knock Shrine will take place on Sunday July 17. All pioneers are invited to attend on this special day.

Cash for Clobber at Ballina FRC

If you are clearing out your home drop the clothes, shoes, bags, etc, into the Ballina Family Resource Centre, Abbey Street, Ardnaree, the team there are doing a Cash for Clobber as a fundraiser for the centre, your support would be greatly appreciated. Liam Lawton Concert at Ballintubber Abbey

A Liam Lawton concert will take place in Ballintubber Abbey on Friday July 29 at 8pm. Tickets are on sale from the Abbey Office by calling (094 ) 9030934 or from Downtown Records Castlebar and Westport and cost €25.

Walk on Wednesday

With the school holidays just starting, Clogher Heritage Centre is introducing WOW day (Walk on Wednesday ) each Wednesday commencing at 2pm. The family friendly walks on Clogher Bog Loop Walk continue each Wednesday for July and August at 7pm. For bookings or enquiries contact (094 ) 9360891.

Glenamoy/Ballinaboy 10k

The Glenamoy/Ballinaboy 10K walk/run will take place on Sunday July 17 at 2pm. This is the fourth year of the event and this year the funds go to Cill Chomain GAA Club and The Ava Fallon Fund. Ava is a seven-year-old girl from County Clare who has a brain tumour. Her grandparents both come from the parish of Kilcommon. Please support this very worthy cause and sponsorship cards are available locally. Knock Basilica rededication

Knock Basilica will be officially rededicated on Saturday July 16 at 3pm. The Mass will be concelebrated by Cardinal Seán O’Malley and members of the Archdiocese of Boston who are on a historic pilgrimage to Knock Shrine, accompanied by the Mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh. Run Islandeady 5k and 10k

To coincide with the Islandeady Family Festival, Islandeady Cycling Club is hosting its inaugural 5k and 10k race on Saturday July 30, starting at 10am from Jack's Old Cottage, Islandeady, Castlebar. This year’s charity partner is the Melissa Patterson fund which was established last year following the tragic death of Melissa Patterson in a road accident. The aim of this fund is highlighting sport in honour of Melissa's name, with special emphasis on supporting children from a disadvantaged background. The race is officially measured and licence is granted by Athletics Ireland in conjunction with Westport Athletics Club. The race will be manually timed. The race will start and finish at Jack's Old Cottage, Derrycourane, Islandeady, at 10am sharp on Saturday July 30. From there participants will run in a clockwise direction around a 5km route ending back at Jack's Cottage. Those entering the 10km event must cover the route a second time. Parking will be available adjacent to Jack's Cottage. Participants will be able to collect their race number in Jack's Cottage from 8am until 9.30am on the morning of race day. Race briefing will be at 9.45am. Refreshments will be served after. Entry is €10 per adult, €20 per family, and under 16s are free.
