Young People from Mayo Excel in Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards

The Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards in partnership with Aldi took place last Saturday July 2 in the Citywest Hotel and Conference Centre, Dublin. Islandeady Foróige Club scooped the Gold Star Award for its project "A village enhancement project including the re-development of a local slipway", and Cyber Crew Ballina Neighbourhood Youth Project won a Bronze Star Award for its project "An internet safety awareness campaign". There was lots of other Mayo involvement in the awards.

The projects from Mayo were as follows: Islandeady Foróige Club undertook a village enhancement project including the re-development of a local slipway; Belcarra Foróige Club carried out an inter-generational project to create a mural celebrating 100 years of community life; Aghamore Foróige Club held a fundraiser for an Alzheimer’s respite centre and the creation of a 1916 memorial garden; Big Brother Big Sister Programme Castlebar held a fundraising project to make the local hospital a more family friendly place; Castlebar Neighbourhood Youth Project undertook a creative anti-litter and dog fouling campaign; Ballina YouthBank carried out a campaign to promote positive mental health among young people; Swinford Foróige Club held a fundraising project for a local paralysed girl needing treatment in America; Comhairle na nÓg Mayo worked on a project introducing new discount student cards for teenagers; Crossmolina Foróige Club held an inter-generational afternoon tea dance; Louisburgh Foróige Club held a social inclusion project targeting the elderly and local farmers; Tooreen Foróige Club carried out a project to organise a St Patrick’s Day parade and boost community spirit; Teen Scene Neighbourhood Youth Project, Ballina, carried out a project to build relationships within the Foróige community; Ballina Neighbourhood Youth Project Juniors were involved in a anti-litter campaign for Ballina; Fiona Connolly from Big Brother Big Sister Programme carried out a restoration project for the local graveyard; Westport Neighbourhood Youth Project got involved in helping young people who live with parents who have mental health issues, to highlight they are not alone; and finally the Cyber Crew Ballina Neighbourhood Youth Project carried out an internet safety awareness campaign.
