The approach road to Ireland West Airport could be named after the late Monsignor Horan following a proposal at the Claremorris Municipal District's monthly meeting this week. At the meeting Fine Gael councillor John Cribben put forward a motion at the meeting to call the R376 road which links up to the airport the Monsignor Horan Road. He also put forward a second motion calling for the roundabout at the entrance to the airport to be named the Monsignor Dominic Grealy Roundabout. Both of his motions received full backing from the elected members in the Municipal District.
Cllr Cibben said: "Everyone is aware of Monsignor Horan's role in the airport, and everyone would agree if it wasn't for him it wouldn't have happend only for him as he said at the time he was an old man with a dream, that was in a hurry and he wanted to turn it into a reality. While many people thought that dream would never happen, he had a vision, commitment, courage, and diplomatic skills and he delivered the airport.
"In the immediate aftermath of the untimely death of Monsignor Horan, Monsignor Grealy to use the phrase was left holding the baby and at the time there was concern that the progress may come to a standstill, but Monsignor Grealy stood up to the plate and he ensured that the plans and vision that Monsignor Horan had would be taken to the next level. He never got the recognition he deserved for it. That's why I feel we should call the roundabout after him."
