Emotional journey west begins for Biden

Shortly before 1.45pm US Vice President Joe Biden touched down in Ireland West Airport Knock.

With a roar from the skies, the US Military Plane, code named Air Force 2 touched down and taxied to a stop at the far end of the air field.

After being greeted by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and other dignitaries, Biden met group of flag waving local school children.

The US Vice President Joe Biden is due to arrive in Ireland West Airport Knock in the next hour.

He'll be greeted on the runway, by a 12 strong welcoming party which will be led by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny and a number of other local dignitaries.

US vice president Joe Biden is en route to Mayo this morning in an emotional journey to visit his ancestral home.

Speaking recently, Mr Biden said the Irish trip means ” a great deal” to him, as he had hoped to make the trip with his son Beau, who died of cancer last year.

Mr Biden arrived in Dublin on Tuesday night along with several family members, and was welcomed to Government Buildings by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Mr Biden this morning signed the visitor book in the State Reception Room at Aras an Uachtarain and is now holding a bilateral meeting with President Higgins.

As he signed the book, Mr Biden told the President that his Irish great-grandfather would be very proud.

He said he had been to Ireland many times privately but he had wanted to visit here as the descendant of immigrants who was now the Vice President of the United States.

His daughter, five grandchildren, sister and brother are accompanying him, and he said he was looking forward to seeing the places where his forefathers came from.
