Five children from the Quay School in Westport have been named among the winners in this year's annual Cavan Crystal Poetry Competition. This national competition is open to children throughout the island of Ireland and while the Quay School has been among the winners in the past, it was extraordinary that five pupils from fifth and sixth classes were listed among this year's award recipients.
On Sunday last, the pupils were invited to attend the awards ceremony which was held in the Cavan Crystal Hotel. Children were presented with individual awards by the sponsors and many of the winning entries were published in an anthology of poetry which was also presented to the children.
Congratulations to Ted Horan, Jason Monroe, Ciara O’Malley, Eoin Lally, and Aisling Brown, and their teachers, Ann Lally and Ciaran Hynes who supported the children as they prepared their entries, along with Mrs Breda Mc Ginn who was instrumental in introducing this poetry competition to the school.
