Custom House Studios at Westport Quay is hosting an exhibition Song Lines by Daniel Lipstein and Niall Naessens. The exhibition was opened last night, Thursday June 2, by John Mulloy at the Custom House Studios Gallery, The Quay, Westport, and runs every day until June 26.
The work by Daniel Lipstein in this exhibition is a collection of multi-plates etchings, and some paintings on paper, expressing themes of mystical and poetic nature that intrigued and occupied him during some years. It is mainly a meditation about this world and the world behind the veil symbolised by the ocean, with fish travelling in and out of it, and the philosopher/artist/viewer reflecting on it and on him/herself simultaneously.
The work by Niall Naessens included in Song-Lines is an eclectic yet comprehensive collection of editioned etchings and monoprint drawings. These print works are considered compositions of landscape imagery and repeating motifs using a peculiar drawing syntax. Ornamentation and a deliberate colour palette define the sentiment of these images. The artist attempts to create a unique perspective by imposing contemporary thought on the traditional genre of landscape art. Landscapes are intimate rather than panoramic. The artist prefers a square format dispensing with the peripheries to focus on more circumscribed outlook. These prints outline passing moments hinting at narratives and describe the environs of the townland of Lios na Caolbhaí where he lives and works.
