With the deadline just days away to sign up for this year's VHI Women's Mini-Marathon on Monday June 6, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is making a final appeal to the women of Mayo to sign up today and help raise much-needed funds for the charity.
As part of its 'One in 1,000' appeal, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is hoping to recruit 1,000 women and become one of the biggest charity contingents to take part in this year's event. A really fun day out, it is open to all levels of fitness and participants can run, jog or walk.
Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is hoping to raise €100,000 for vital cystic fibrosis services, including the funding of dedicated state-of-the-art cystic fibrosis facilities in hospitals, and grants for exercise equipment, fertility treatment, transplant assessment, counselling, and bereavement support.
As a long-standing supporter of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and participant in the women's mini-marathon, Nuala Carey knows the sun will come out this June 6: "I am very familiar with cystic fibrosis as a friend had it when I was in college and I also have a relative whose son was born with it. You can see how the disease really impacts people's lives in terms of managing it, avoiding infection, and making GP and hospital visits.
"So that's why I think it is important for me to take part in the One in 1,000 campaign and this will be my fifth year to take part for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. Ten kilometres is not a lot when running with thousands of others. Women are not just doing it for themselves, but for cystic fibrosis, and that's the difference. Plus, it's not about being first past the finish line - everyone gets a medal!"
