Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has received confirmation from the Central Statistics Office that the Live Register in Co Mayo has more than doubled for those aged under 25 from January 2008 to January 2009. The increase was recorded at being 106.7 per cent representing an annual increase of 1,089 for those under 25.
The overall rise in Co Mayo stands at 84.9 per cent representing an increase of 4,567 bringing the total in the county to 9,946. This is a huge increase in the number becoming unemployed in the county and is much more disproportionate compared to other counties where the percentage increases are much lower, said Deputy Kenny.
Dep Kenny added: “This confirms that despite all the warning signs and gradual increases in unemployment, the Government has still managed to fail to counteract these dreadful increases in unemployment that make a devastating impact on those affected. I have identified the gradual increases in unemployment in Co Mayo over the past few months and identified the need to reform some schemes such as the Back to Education Allowance.”
