The latest quarterly rental report by property website Daft.ie has reported that rents in Mayo have risen by 3.6 per cent in the first three months of the year compared to the rents that were being paid in the first three months of 2015. Nationally rents have risen by two per cent compared to the same three month period of last year.
The report found that the average advertised rent in Mayo between January and March this year was €557 per month, an increase of eight per cent on what was the lowest figure which was in 2013. In Castlebar the average rent being sought is even more expensive than the average in the county with the county town rents being sought coming in at €600 per month.
At the May meeting of Mayo County Council which took place on Monday afternoon, a protest was held by People Before Profit/Anti Austerity Alliance supporters who were calling for more social housing to be built in the county to meet the demand from the large number of people who cannot afford the going rate for rents in the county.
