Blacksod Bay Assisted Emigration
On Saturday May 14 from 2pm to 3pm, this talk will bring to life the story of how 3,350 people left on 15 sailings from Blacksod Bay to the US and Canada between 1883 and 1884. These families of Erris, Achill and Newport West, left in search of a brighter future and were assisted by the Tuke Fund. Join Rosemarie Geraghty from Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre Eachléim to hear how they fared, where they travelled to and what happened to the families who were part of our local Mayo community. Booking required (094 ) 9031751 or by email at [email protected].
Give Your Voice Wings
The museum asked visitors to make an origami crane to show their support to people who have moved from their home. Particularly people who are forced to leave and are part of the ongoing refugee crisis. The museum was delighted with the response. Hundreds of birds were made and they form a flock in the museum café art space. 'Give Your Voice Wings' is led by the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life and the artist Bryan Gerard Duffy. The project coincides with the temporary exhibition Migrant Women - Shared Experiences. For more information check our website http://www.museum.ie/Country-Life/Country-Life-Projects/Give-your-Voice-Wings. On display until end of June 2016.
