Ireland West Airport has announced a very special live gala concert that will take place in the airport's terminal building on Friday May 27 to mark the 30th anniversary of its official opening. The concert is a celebration not to be missed and looks back over 30 years of memories and nostalgia for the airport that critics said ‘should never have been built’.
It promises to be a blockbuster night of entertainment featuring musical performances from some household names including Tommy Fleming, Gerry Carney, and the fantastic Rejoice Gospel Choir, who will perform a melody of songs which featured in the wonderful 2010 musical On a Wing and Prayer.
The night will take a journey back through time as some familiar faces such as Padraig Flynn, Terry Reilly, and Willie Joe Padden recall their memories of the airport over the last 30 years, providing some fascinating insights and never before told stories of how a west of Ireland priest convinced the Irish government to build an airport in the middle of a disadvantaged, depopulated region in east Mayo, at a time when the country was in dire financial straits. Now 30 years on it is set to have a record high of almost 750,000 passengers using the airport. Some very special tributes will also be showcased throughout the evening from well known faces such as Christy Moore, Michael O'Leary, and many more.
Tickets are on sale costing €15 and are available from the Bargain Box Charlestown, Co Mayo, and also on sale in the shops and restaurants at Ireland West Airport. All proceeds from the evening will go to the airport's three nominated charities for 2016 which are Cancer Care West, MS Ireland and Pieta House. Tickets are limited and will be sold on a first come first serve basis.
Joe Gilmore, managing director Ireland West Airport, said: “We are delighted to announce this special gala concert as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the official opening of the airport.
