Tomorrow, Saturday April 30, will see the second ever Mayo Day take place across the county and the globe, with 35 events planned for towns and villages in the county over the weekend. Mayo Day is a celebration of our 'Mayo-ness' in Mayo communities worldwide, it offers Mayo people at home and away an opportunity to celebrate all that is great about their progressive, can-do county.
In the Castlebar area the events that will take place include a mini marathon; Castlebar Celebrates Mayo Day; Mayo Day at the Garden of Remembrance; and National Museum of Ireland Celebrates Mayo Day. The official Mayo 1916 Commemoration Event will take place in the town; and Lá Mhaigh Eo and Comóradh 1916 will take place in Tourmakeady.
In the West Mayo region the events include Mayo Association World Convention in Belmullet; Ireland's Highest Networking Event on Croagh Patrick; on Clare Island there will be an adventure race; Westport hosts a day of free entertainment at the Town Hall; Westport Golf Club - MayoDay Open FourBall Betterball - each visitor receives complimentary green fee voucher; A Taste of Mayo bike buffet in Westport; Inishturk Island will host the launch of a locally handcrafted 'Currach Adhmaid' and Inishturk Community Futures Plan 2020 event; in Bangor Erris Mayo Day treasure hunt will take place, along with Lá Mhaigheo Eo in Achill, and events in Ballycory National Park and Corrán Buí in Ros Dumhach.
In the Ballina area, Ballina Chamber of Commerce will host a Riverdance followed by bringing the world's largest Mayo flag up the river; Killasser Community Centre will launch a "Mayo Day Card" with Mayo themed celebrations and refreshments; Ballina AC will host a Mayo Day 8km run; in Foxford the Mayfly Hotel will host a number of music events; Ballina Stephenites will host a family fun day treasure hunt; Crossmolina No Name Club will host and adventure race; Swinford NS will host a Mayo Day Disco; and the Admiral Brown branch of Comhaltas Ceoiltoir Eireann will host a cultural family event.
In the Claremorris area the Ballyhaunis Operation Transformation will get under way. Both Claremorris and Ballinrobe will host events, as will Ireland West Airport Knock, and Charlestown Arts Centre will host a number of Mayo Day themed events.
