Bail refused for man in sexual offence case

A 70-year-old man was remanded in custody on Wednesday to appear today in Harristown Court after being charged under the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act and appearing in Castlebar District Court on that charge. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on Tuesday by gardai and was charged in Claremorris Garda Station.

Gardai opposed an application for bail from the man's solicitor in court in the belief the man would be a flight risk as he is a UK citizen. Judge Mary Devins refused the application for bail and remanded him to appear in Harristown Court this morning, April 22, for the preparation of a book of evidence and the possibility of further charges.
