Mayo had to dig deep last weekend to pick up their first two league points of the season and get their first victory in the win column for the new season. It was a tough encounter on the field against Monaghan, but Mayo came through at the end and midfielder Tom Parsons was happy to have the season up and running. "Tough tough game out there, especially when the heat came on and Monaghan came back at us, but fair play to Robbie for showing the composure to kick the two frees at the end of the game. "
Seeing out the game at the end was one thing that he was very happy about, saying: "We finished well, that's the thing with games, teams will have their purple patches and when we do we have to execute our return and when the opposition have their purple patch we have to minimise it and we did. We had some of the good, the bad, and the ugly today, but to come up here and get the result was the most important thing."
Having put in two very solid performances against both Dublin and Donegal, seeing that performance turn into a victory was something the team needed, he added. "We did, absolutely, we did put in performances in other games, but you have to turn performances into points and the key thing to note when you lose at this time of the year is that when you lose at this time of the year not everything is wrong, but also when you win not everything is right. Although we came up and won we still have a lot to work on and some aspects of our game last week would have been better than this week."
The intensity of division one football is something that does not allow for too many mistakes, the Charlestown man said. "Division one is championship football, it's getting higher and higher quality each year, and your exertion levels and effort levels isn't what you put into championship now, and every game in the league is very competitive. You can see that teams are picking up points from everybody, but we've a quick turn around now to Kerry at home, so it's forgotten tonight and back to work tomorrow. We've got a huge task, we're by no means still in division one and a win is critical against Kerry, we still have only two points from four games and have a long way to go."
