Mulroy takes the Leas Cathaoirleach seat

Westport based Fianna Fáil councillor Brendan Mulroy has taken over the role of Leas Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council. The first term member of the council was elected to the role from newly elected Fianna Fáil TD Lisa Chambers who had to vacate her council seat following her election to the Dáil at the end of February.

Cllr Mulroy was proposed for the position by his party colleague Cllr Al McDonnell with his nomination getting cross party support and Westport based Fine Gael Cllr Teresa McGuire seconding the nomination to the position which he will hold until the next AGM of the council in August this year. Cllr Mulroy thanked all the councillors who supported his nomination to the role and also praised the newly elected TD Lisa Chambers for her work in the council since she was elected. He also paid tribute to both Cllr Rose Conway Walsh for her election campaign and said that he expected to see her sitting in Seannead Eireann if she decided to run for it. He also praised outgoing Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin for the grace and dignity she showed in the face of her defeat in the election, saying: "She showed there's a way to lose and she showed great dignity while speaking after the election and congratulating those who won seats. She did herself and her party proud."

Mayo County Council will hold a special meeting this coming Monday, March 14 to co-opt a new member to the council to replace Deputy Chambers for the remainder of the council's term.
