Top of the table clash for Mayo

Ladies Football: National Football League

Mayo will go looking for their fourth win from four games in the league this Sunday. Having beaten Cork, Dublin and Galway so far in the league, it would be easy to feel they've got the hardest games out of the way already. But this Sunday they welcome to Swinford Amenity Park an Armagh side that are in as rich a vein of form as they are themselves. Armagh sit level on nine points from three games just like Mayo at the top of the table, and the ladies from the Orchard county are also in fine form.

Armagh opened up their league campaign with a massive 3-20 to 0-3 win over Tyrone in Drumquinn, they followed that up with another impressive showing when they beat Munster champions Kerry who also knocked Mayo out of the championship at the quarter-final stage last season 4-11 to 0-12. A fortnight ago, they had a much tougher test when Monaghan really put it up to them, but Armagh were able to go home with the points thanks to five point win on a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-9.

Armagh who were only promoted out of division two last year, were lead by teenager Aimee Mackin who scored 1-5 for the Orcahard County girls, with Lauren McConville getting the second goal for the team that is managed this year by former All Ireland winner with Armagh and two time All Star Ronan Clarke.

Of course Mayo come into the game on the back of a fine start to the season too, their most recent outing was the short trip to Tuam Stadium where they edged out Galway on a score of 2-8 to 1-10. Cora Staunton led the charge for Mayo bagging eight points over the hour, with Sarah Rowe and Aileen Gilroy getting the goals. The remarkable Staunton has now bagged 2-23 in just three outings for Mayo this year.

Mayo will follow this weekend's game with a trip to Kerry looking for a bit of revenge for last year's championship defeat, before they have a month off until their next run of games against Tyrone on the road and Monaghan at home which will round off their divisional games. At this stage they are well placed to make the play-offs of the competition later in the spring.
