New anger management programme for Mayo

Knock Counselling Centre, in conjunction with the Irish Association for Anger Management, will run an evening programme for adults who wish to express their anger in a healthier way.

The popular 'Temper your Anger', anger management programme will start on Tuesday April 12 and run for six consecutive Tuesdays. Fiona McCarthy, director of Knock Counselling Service, highlighted the importance of such programmes taking place in the community. “At present there are very few psycho-educational programmes on stress and anger management available, so we are delighted to be collaborating with IaAM once again to deliver this programme in Mayo,” she said.

The programme teaches participants how to control their anger and stress levels by using cutting-edge techniques, and comes at a time when a recent poll indicated that 63 per cent of participants feel that Irish people are getting angrier. Participants on the programme learn strategies to enable them to successfully deal with anger when it arises.

Peter Devers, psychotherapist and regional consultant with IaAM, added: “In some instances, the only option available to people with problem anger is medication or referral to statutory mental health services. We hope that our evening programme will help to bridge a resource gap and give service users a better choice.”

Knock Counselling Service, which is based at Knock Shrine, is also in the process of extending its anger management programmes to cater for adolescents. For further information, contact Knock Counselling Centre on (094 ) 9375032, or log on to www.knockshrine.ie
