The pupils in the Quay School in Westport have begun work on an interesting project to mark the 1916 Centenary. This project will take place over the next number of weeks and will hopefully come to fruition towards the end of February.
A large number of old photographs, some dating from 1904 are on display in the school. These photographs are frequently used for lessons in local history but over the next few weeks, they will take on a new lease of life in the Quay School. All pupils in fourth, fifth and sixth classes will be given an old photograph of Westport.
The pupils will then investigate the photograph and try to pinpoint the location from where it was taken. Once this has been done, each pupil will then take a photograph from the same location and email it to the school. Both photographs will then be printed and displayed side-by-side. The school hope that this competition will in some way enhance the children’s understanding of what life was like in the early 1900s.
Children in junior classes will work on a similar theme and they will be invited to colour in stencil drawings of Westport from the early 1900s. Again these colourings will be on display in the school over the coming weeks.
The Quay School will celebrate Proclamation Day on Tuesday March 15 and all parents and extended family members are invited to join the pupils on this special occasion. Full details to follow.
