Mayo look to get off to winning ways

The Mayo senior hurlers get their league season underway on Sunday, when they host Donegal in Elverys MacHale Park at 2pm. Mayo will be hoping to use the league as a learning curve as they have much bigger things on their mind come summertime.

Last year Mayo were relegated from the Christy Ring Cup for the first time when they lost out to the Nicky Rackard champions Roscommon in a play-off, consigning Mayo to the third tier of hurling action for this season.

Mayo manager JP Coen has stayed on for another year in charge of the side and he has added to his backroom team by bringing in Liam Donoghue, the former Clarinbridge manager and Galway senior goalkeeper who just happens to be the brother of new Galway senior boss Micheál.

The backroom team is completed by Tommy Feeney, David McConn and former Mayo captain Derek Walsh. Mayo will also face, Meath, Wicklow Down and Armagh over the five games in the league with their Rackard Cup season getting underway away to Tyrone on April 23.
