The Mayo Centre for Independent Living have welcomed Jackie Lynott as Coordinator of the Self Care to Wellness Programme. The Self Care to Wellness programme commenced in Mayo in January 2015. This initiative is a joint partnership between the HSE, Mayo Centre of Independent Living, Disability Federation of Ireland and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The programme is designed to provide individuals living in Mayo with a long-term or ongoing health condition(s ) an opportunity to attend a six-week programme designed to support their self-care management skills. The majority of people living with a long-term health condition want to maintain an independent, healthy and an active life and with good self-management support this can be achieved.
The Self-Care to Wellness programme follows the chronic disease self-management programme model, developed and tested at Stanford University in California. To date ten programmes have been delivered in Mayo in Ballina, Castlebar and Westport. New programmes are starting in February 2016 in Belmullett, Ballina, Castlebar and Ballinrobe. Programmes are delivered by two trained facilitators whom one or both are themselves living with a long-term health condition. During the six weeks of the programme, participants will attend a 2.5 hour weekly session where they will learn new skills to manage their health condition on a day to day basis. The course will start in Aras Inis Gluaire Bellmullet commencing on Wednesday, February 10 at 11am; in the Newman Institute in Ballina commencing on Tuesday, February 23 at 10.30am; in the Tacu Family Resource Centre, Ballinrobe commencing on Tuesday, February 23 at 10am.
