Sancta Maria College (SMC ) in Louisburgh is delighted to announce the staging of their 21st annual musical production, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
The show was first staged in the school in 1999, so it is one that holds fond memories for many around Louisburgh and further afield. Featuring songs that all in the audience are sure to be singing along with, including ‘Bless your Beautiful Hide” and “Goin’ Courtin’, this year’s production is bound to be another hall-filler.
The musical, set in 1850s America, follows the story of Milly, a pretty young cook who marries Adam Pontipee, an obnoxious woodsman, after a very brief courtship. When the two return to Adam's farm, Milly is shocked to meet his six ill-mannered brothers, all of whom live in his cabin. She promptly begins teaching the brothers proper behaviour and, most importantly, how to court a woman.
However, after the brothers kidnap six local girls following a town barn dance, a group of indignant villagers tries to track them down. A long winter ensues for the seven lonesome brides and brothers, but will love win by the time spring arrives?
This year’s Transition Year students are, as usual, fully involved in putting the show on stage. Ably guided by stage manager Eimear McDonnell and assistant Shauna Cave, the students are busy with set design, choreography, programme design and costumes. Ms Marian Gill returns for her fourth year at the helm as director and is delighted to be involved in this 21st production of musicals in SMC. For his 21st year, the talented John Flatley returns as musical director to add his eclectic style to the well-known songs.
The show takes place from Thursday, January 28, until Saturday, January 30. Tickets will be available from early next week in the school, Durkans Gala Louisburgh and Duffy’s Bookshop, Westport.
