Black pudding – the new superfood

It is official: black pudding has been declared a superfood for 2016, joining seaweed, black beans, avocado oil and birch water on the list.

The superfood claim was made by well-known nutritional oracle MuscleWorld, an online shop specialising in lean meats for body builders. Kelly’s Butchers in Newport, well known for its award winning black pudding, is reporting a surge of interest in the traditional Irish product.

“A lot of people have been asking us about it in the last few days,” said Seán Kelly. “They love the taste of the pudding, and now they’re delighted to discover what a healthy product it is. To be honest, we’re not surprised; we’ve always believed Kelly’s Black Pudding is a healthy option and we know the high quality of the ingredients."

Mr Kelly also spoke enthusiastically about the benefits of another Kelly product, the Greenway Pudding: “Kelly’s Greenway Pudding must be an ultra superfood," he said. "It has all the benefits of the black pudding plus organic seaweeds as well. Two superfoods in one!" The Greenway Pudding is only available in Kelly’s shop, Knock Airport, or through the website www.kellysbutchers.com

A recent interview with Seán Kelly on Today FM about the new superfood has been extensively quoted in national and international media. In it he described his own favourite way to eat black pudding: “I just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and then spread it on toast like pate," he said. "Top that with a bit of marmalade and you have a delicious breakfast or snack.”

Kelly’s Black Pudding is high in protein, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. It is also rich in iron and zinc, two minerals frequently missing from modern diets. It is also low in carbohydrates, adding to the appeal for anyone watching the scales. Kelly’s Butchers confidently expect it to soar in popularity this year.
