The curtain will finally fall on the 2015 Mayo League season nine days into 2016 when Glenhest Rovers and Claremorris face off in a play-off to see who will claim the Premier A crown in Milebush Park tomorrow evening at 7pm.
Both teams finished locked on 41 points after the 18 rounds of games in the division, with Claremorris closing out their regular season action last weekend with a comprehensive 9-0 win over Swinford. Both teams have already wrapped up promotion to the top division for next year, but it was a surprising result in Glenhest Rovers last game that necessitated the need for the play-off. Having gone through their first 17 games unbeaten, they were turned over 1-0 by Partry Athletic, leaving the gap open for Claremorris to force a play-off for the title. Both the weather and Claremorris run to the last 64 of the FAI Junior Cup saw their final game against Swinford pushed out and out again to last weekend.
Claremorris head into the game having scored a remarkable 87 goals in their 18 games, that's just under five goals per game in the regular season. But they will be coming up against a Glenhest Rovers defence that is one of the meanest around, conceding just 13 goals in their regular season run, however they trail Claremorris by 48 goals in the scoring charts. This one could be a real battle, however, with Glenhest going almost three weeks without a game and Claremorris finding their scoring boots again last weekend after being beaten 6-1 by Moore United in the FAI Junior on the same weekend that Rovers went down to Partry Athletic, the advantage could lie with the south Mayo men.
