Three workplace deaths recorded in Mayo last year

The Health and Saftey Authority in its report on workplace fatalities in 2015 has reported that there were three workplace deaths recorded in Mayo last year. The report found that there were 55 people in total killed in the country in work place accidents over the past 12 months, which was the exact same number recorded in 2014.

The three deaths in Mayo were broken down over three different sections, with one person being killed in agriculture industry, the mining and quarrying industry, and one in the public administration industry respectively.

The agriculture related death happened when a four-year-old non working male was struck by a moving vehicle in July, the mining and quarrying industry death happened in June when a 28-year-old male employee was killed following a vertical impact resulting from a fall. The public administration death happened when a 58-year-old male was killed in June when he was stuck by a moving vehicle.

The report found that nationally incidents involving vehicles were the main cause of fatal accidents in the workplace, accounting for 21 of the total. Fifteen people were killed as a result of falls from height, the second most common cause of death. Two-thirds of work-related deaths (37 of 55 ) occurred in businesses with fewer than 10 employees, mainly in agriculture, construction and fishing. There were four child fatalities in 2015, all of which occurred in agriculture.
