Last Saturday night January 31 Bar Ritz was the place to be if you were looking for great night of entertainment, Jennifer Evans from Dublin kicked off the show playing tracks from her forthcoming album which included ‘Tomaselli Has a Friend’, ‘Scattered’, and the ever lovely ‘Dominique’s Curl’. Jennifer plans to have her new record out by spring of this year and it is definitely a record to keep an eye out for in the near future. The second band of the night were The Zen Yetis playing their original material which rocked the excited audience to the very core, as usual bringing their own style of Rock back to Bar Ritz with their hard driven fuzzy guitar sound, a group that always comes up with the goods.
At 11.30pm The Rye took to the stage, the first traditional folk band to take part in the Finbar Hoban Presents series. Hailing from the west coast of Ireland, this five piece really know how to throw a party, I have to say that I have never seen a more talented bunch of musicians play in an intimate venue than The Rye. The hype around Castlebar for the past week about this band had been phenomenal regarding their live performances and they did not fail to impress. Something very special was about to happen at Bar Ritz tonight.
Kicking off with their well known track ‘There’s a Moth At Your Window, right through to ‘Syco’, this band has to be seen live to be believed! In these times of recession this group will make you forget about what’s going on in the economy right now! For anybody who missed this show and wants to hear more about The Rye check out their MySpace page at www.myspace.com/theryeband The Rye finished up with their brilliant interpretation of a mixture of tracks from the White Stripes, ‘Seven Nation Army’ and Daft Punk entitled ‘Square Peg’. The Rye made a promise to the audience that they will return to Bar Ritz in the coming months with the help of Finbar Hoban.
Finbar would like to thank the following people for helping out on the night, Keith McGreal Photography, Westcoast Audio for providing sound, Chris Rippingale, Kenny McGreal, and the staff of Bar Ritz. Finbar Hoban Presents… is now taking bookings for support slots over the coming months. If you have a demo or CD of your band send it to Finbar Hoban or Mulroy’s Bar, Main Street, Castlebar.
