Mayo Fine Gael TD, Deputy Michelle Mulherin, has this week confirmed that Mayo County Council is to install two new pedestrian crossings in Ballina town centre, at Humbert Street and Bohernasup Road. Deputy Mulherin said: “I have been contacted by a number of pedestrians, many of them elderly, regarding road safety in the vicinity of the mini roundabout at Humbert Street and Market Square.”
She went on to say: “Pedestrians trying to get to and from the town centre shops can have great difficulty crossing this junction because of the high traffic volumes, including many large trucks, that pass through it. They are dependent on the goodwill of motorists to stop and allow them to cross and need to be alert to traffic on four roads, making it particularly hazardous for the elderly, people of restricted mobility or poor eyesight, and those with children or carrying heavy shopping.
“I have made a number of representations to Mayo County Council seeking improvements to safety and I am pleased that it is to act. The council has confirmed to me that it is to install a crossing in the next week at Humbert Street and that another crossing is to be installed at Bohernasup next year.”
She concluded: "I am delighted that the council is acting on people’s concerns and I would like to thank Orla Bourke, town engineer, for progressing this matter.”
