Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, this week announced that €340k in funding has been approved through Fáilte Ireland’s Capital Investment Programme for two tourism projects in Mayo.
Minister Ring stated: “A grant of €300k has been approved for Mayo County Council to further develop the Great Western Greenway by renovating the Old Station House at Mulranny to provide an activity service and tourism information hub for visitors along the route. The project will incorporate toilet, showers, and changing facilities, drying facilities for hikers and cyclists, a first aid services and responder centre, a location for guide services and guide training, and a bike hire and information point.
“A further grant of €40k has been approved to assist the development of a new indoor visitor attraction on Achill Island by the Achill Local Area Development Company. The company is converting part of their head office into a visitor attraction focusing on Achill’s Deserted Village, its maritime history and the creation of an Achill off-line self-guiding tablet to be made available for hire to visitors."
Minister Ring continued: “The Wild Atlantic Way has already brought great benefits to Mayo but we are not content to rest on our laurels. I am keen that we continue to develop our attractions along the route and continue to add to the great appeal we already possess. These two projects will allow us to sustain visitor growth in Mulranny and Achill, and that’s good for the local economy and local job creation.
“The funding has been approved in keeping with Fáilte Ireland’s ongoing work to develop the Wild Atlantic Way and follows a recent announcement that photo markers and information points are being installed at all the discovery points along the route, including those in Mayo.”
