Rise in number of District Court cases heard in Mayo last year

According to the 2007 Courts Service Report, which examined statistics from the Castlebar and Ballina District Court Offices, 3,623 public order, drugs, larceny, sexual offences and road traffic cases were brought before the district courts in Mayo—13 more cases than in 2006.

Convictions for road traffic offences in the region have increased from 2,608 to 2,686—an increase from 1,196 to 1,438 in the Ballina District Courts Office and a reduction from 1,412 to 1,248 in the Castlebar District Court Office.

The statistics show a rise in larceny cases brought forward, from 223 to 233, with the biggest increase being in the Castlebar District Office; up ten cases (108 to 119 in Castlebar, 115 to 114 in Ballina ).

Drug cases brought forward showed an increase from 32 to 34 in Ballina and from 51 to 52 in Castlebar, making a total of 86 for 2007 in comparison to 83 in 2006.

The number of public order cases were down from 688 to 611; a reduction of 46 in Castlebar from 302 to 256, and dropping from 386 to 355 in Ballina. Sexual offence cases reduced from eight in 2006 to seven this year (Ballina—three cases dropping to one, and Castlebar – up one from five to six ).

Overall, Castlebar was down from 1,878 cases to 1,681 and Ballina cases were up from 1,732 to 1,942.
