Mayo to feature in UTV Ireland’s Lesser Spotted Journeys

Lesser Spotted Journeys, a new series on UTV Ireland, continues with presenter Joe Mahon embarking on a tour of the country with a visit to the parish of Kilcommon in northwest Mayo on Tuesday next, September 29, at 8pm.

This episode follows Joe and the Lesser Spotted Journeys team on a trip to the Gaeltacht region of Kilcommon in Mayo, where they learn about the long traditions of farming and fishing in the area and discover some of the oldest rock formations in Ireland.

The new travel and ‘chat show of the hedgerows’ will visit some of Ireland’s lesser known sites and destinations, and will give an in-depth insight into each area visited, including interviews with local historians and craftspeople.

During his visit Joe meets a number of locals who introduce him to the cultural wonders that Kilcommon has to offer. Historian and author Treasa Ní Ghearraigh introduces Joe to the grave of the sixth century St Galligan and reveals the special burial customs practiced by locals, both past and present. The Lesser Spotted Journeys team is also brought on a trip of Belderrig Harbour and Belmullet by geologist Ronan Hennessy, where they encounter the ancient Dalriadian rock formations, some of which date back almost two billion years. In addition, this episode features fisherman Pat O’Donnell and retired fisherman and farmer Mickey Monaghan, both of whom shed light on crab fishing in the region as well as the traditional art of curragh building. A combination of history, scenery, and conversation, Lesser Spotted Journeys will air exclusively on UTV Ireland every Tuesday at 8pm.
