A meeting took place in Ballina today (Thursday, September 17 ) with representatives from Irish Water, Mayo County Council, elected representatives and Ballina Chamber of Commerce to discuss the emergency watermains rehabilitation works which are being fast tracked by Irish Water.
On foot of the meeting a programme of works has been drawn up and Irish Water will be working closely with local elected representatives and the Chamber of Commerce in carrying out the works.
Speaking after the meeting, Gerry Luskin, Manager of the Ballina Manor Hotel said, ‘As a customer that relies heavily on the water supply in Ballina, it was great to be contacted by Irish Water and to work in partnership with the Utility to put in place the plan for these much needed works. The Chamber of Commerce fully supports Irish Water in carrying out these works which are essential for the town of Ballina and the local economy here.’
Sean Corrigan, Regional Information Officer for the North and West at Irish Water said, ‘We welcome the input of the Ballina Chamber of Commerce and the elected representatives who attended the meeting today. This is a very important project for Ballina and Irish Water is delighted to have been able to fast track the works. In recent months Irish Water has also been able to replace 27,000 metres of watermains in the surrounding areas of Ballina which combined with this project will ensure a safe and secure water supply for the town.’
‘Today marks the putting in place of a template whereby Irish Water works with local communities such as the one in Ballina to receive their input and keep them informed of the vital works we are carrying out in communities across the country,' Sean concluded.
Irish Water understands the Christmas period is extremely important to the local traders in Ballina and the schedule of works reflects this. This stage of the works will be completed by the end of November and any other essential works will be carried out after the Christmas period.
